Best Starter Class in Task Bar of Ragnalis
Choose a free opener that matches how you idle, then plan the second and third seats.
Four free openers, zero redeem shortcuts
Task Bar of Ragnalis ships four free base classes: Templar Knight, Priest, Witch, and Gunner. Pirate and Overlord are optional DLC and should not be your day-one decision. There is also no redeem codes system—see Codes—so the real starter question is which free identity you can gear and understand while the client auto-fights on your taskbar.
Official Steam descriptions are short and useful:
- Templar Knight — frontline defender powered by Sigils
- Priest — healer who turns Prayer into recovery and rescue
- Witch — backline damage dealer built around Full Cast spells
- Gunner — ranged attacker who marks and eliminates priority targets
This page helps you pick a first seat, plan the next unlocks in a party of three, and avoid copying Task Bar Hero class advice from a different Steam game.
How to choose without a fake “S-tier only” rule
Ask three questions:
- Do early waves kill you before you kill them?
- Do class-locked drops already point at a second identity you will unlock soon?
- Will you check in often enough to manage Prayer timing and gear swaps, or do you want a simpler clear role?
Idle RPGs punish mismatch more than they punish “not picking the community favorite.” A Witch with no usable backline gear loses to a Templar Knight who can wear what actually dropped. Pair this guide with Early Progression, Beat Early Waves, and the Classes hub.
Templar Knight — safest frontline first pick
Choose Templar Knight when launch stages feel lethal and you want a defender who can stand in the frontline while Sigils do their job. Frontline seats exist for a reason: something has to eat pressure so backline clearers can finish waves.
Strengths for starters:
- Clear official role language (defender)
- Synergy with later Priest sustain
- Makes “survive the idle block” a readable goal
Watch-outs:
- You still need damage somewhere—do not fill all three seats with pure defense later
- Class-locked defender gear is progress only if you keep fielding the Knight
Deep page: Templar Knight.
Priest — when you die between check-ins
Priest is the Prayer recovery and rescue toolkit. Pick Priest early if your clearer keeps almost winning waves but bleeds out during long AFK blocks, or if you already know seat two will be a glassier damage class.
Strengths:
- Turns sustain into a party-wide resource
- Pairs well with Witch or Gunner clearers
- Teaches you to value support seats instead of three DPS clones
Watch-outs:
- Priest alone may clear slowly if you never unlock a real damage seat
- Do not treat Priest as a Task Bar Hero free-DLC myth—roles differ by game
Deep page: Priest.
Witch — Full Cast clearer when loot agrees
Witch is the backline Full Cast damage identity. Choose Witch first when your drops already include caster-friendly pieces and you want delete speed more than a shield wall.
Strengths:
- Strong “finish the wave” fantasy for idle farming
- Natural partner for Templar Knight frontline later
- Makes random skill hunting feel purposeful on damage lines
Watch-outs:
- Soft early walls hurt casters who cannot wear the only drops on the ground
- You will eventually want a frontline or Prayer seat so Witch is not also the only sponge
Deep page: Witch.
Gunner — mark-and-eliminate ranged opener
Gunner marks and eliminates priority targets as a ranged attacker. Many launch complaints mentioned Gunner softness; v1.0.1 fixed Gunner accuracy and eased stages 1-1 through 1-3. Gunner remains a valid free starter if you like ranged clear identity—just do not ignore those patch notes.
Strengths:
- Clear priority-target job in auto combat
- Backline seating that pairs with Templar Knight / Priest
- Accuracy fix makes older “broken Gunner” takes outdated
Watch-outs:
- Class-locked ranged gear still gates you
- If you are soft-locked on chests/EXP, that is a Troubleshooting problem, not a class tier problem
Deep page: Gunner.
Recommended first teams (still free)
You unlock up to three heroes. Think in jobs, not collection:
| Goal | Seat ideas |
|---|---|
| Survive first | Templar Knight → Gunner or Witch → Priest |
| Clear first | Witch or Gunner → Templar Knight → Priest |
| Sustain first | Priest → Witch or Gunner → Templar Knight |
Use Party Builds and the Party Planner before you spend unlocks. Re-check relative value on the Tier List after patches—not before you can clear.
When DLC should wait
Pirate and Overlord expand fantasy, not onboarding. Buy them only after:
- Free loop is fun for more than one evening
- You understand eight equipment slots and nine-copy stacks
- You checked overlap with the DLC Cost Checker
Read Pirate, Overlord, and Pirate & Overlord. Storage pressure is a separate decision under Storage Expansion and Complete DLC Pack.
Patch and bug checklist before you reroll
- Update through v1.0.2 so chests, EXP, and maps work
- Use temporary text size from v1.0.1 if tooltips are unreadable (Controls, Taskbar Setup)
- Remember Reset starts over; emergency “reset again” notes live in Patch Notes
- Soft bans from timezone/anti-cheat false positives are client issues, not “wrong starter class”
Practical decision flow
- Install and learn the watch / loot / build loop in How to Play.
- Pick Templar Knight if you are dying, Witch/Gunner if you cannot kill, Priest if you almost clear but bleed out.
- Protect class-usable stacks with Stack Items and Equipment Slots.
- Unlock the complementary role second—not a duplicate kit.
- Revisit Offline Rewards so AFK time matches your opener’s clear speed.
A “best starter” in Task Bar of Ragnalis is the free class you can equip today and still explain tomorrow. Start there, expand the party on purpose, and leave paid classes for after the free voyage makes sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best free starter class?
Templar Knight if you need frontline survival, Witch or Gunner if you need clear speed, Priest if you need Prayer sustain. There is no single forced pick.
Should I buy Pirate or Overlord first?
No. Learn the four free classes first, then evaluate DLC with the [DLC Cost Checker](/tools/dlc-cost/).
Is Gunner still a bad starter after patches?
v1.0.1 fixed Gunner accuracy and eased early stages. Gunner is a valid free opener if you can gear the ranged line.
Can I change class without Reset?
v1.0.1 Reset starts over. The studio said changing a character inside an existing save is a future feature—see [Patch Notes](/updates/patch-notes/).
